Ranking: The 4 best iPad models

Apple currently offers consumers three tablet models: iPad, Mini 4 and Pro (which is divided into two versions). For this Ranking, we have selected at least one version of each model, so that you know the best options.

Buying Guide

If you’ve never owned an Apple electronic device, you may not be able to understand the fascination that consumers feel for the brand. But, in this Buying Guide, you will know why Apple tablets differ so much from devices from other brands and why you should buy an iPad to call yours.

What are the differentiators of an iPad?

The main feature that makes the iPad a unique model is the iOS operating system that provides the integration of the smartphone (iphone), portable computer (macbook) and tablet (iPad).

Another difference is that all models from the fourth generation have Retina display. The term, patented by Apple, refers to the screen of the devices, in which it is not possible to identify the pixels at a certain distance, which varies from one device to another.

On iPad models, the Retina display has a density of 264 pixels per inch, an intermediate concentration (that of the iPad Mini 4 is greater: 326 dpi), as the tablet is used at a greater distance from the eyes.

With iPad you don’t need to enter a number password to access your device. The screen is unlocked by means of digital identification (Touch ID) on the iPad Mini 4, conventional iPad and 10.5-inch iPad Pro models.

In Pro models of 11 and 12.9 inches, this identification is through Face ID, that is, it scans thousands of points on the user’s face to unlock the device.

The battery works for up to 10 hours of uninterrupted use, for surfing the internet (via Wi-Fi), watching videos or listening to music. If you are going to perform these activities using the navigation data of the cellular network, that time drops to 9 hours.

To recharge the iPad’s battery you can connect it to your computer via the USB cable or use the charger that came with the device.

What is the best iPad for me?

Currently, Apple has three lines of iPad, the Mini 4 model, the Conventional iPad and the iPad Pro (in two versions, with differences between them), so you can buy the ideal model according to your needs and preferences, we will explain the differentials of each one in this section.

iPad Mini 4

The iPad Mini 4 is the model closest to most tablets, it has compact dimensions: 203.2 mm in height, 134.8 mm in width, 6.1 mm in thickness, approximate weight in 300 grams.

The screen is Retina, multi touch, backlit with LED lights, has 7.9 inches, resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels, 326 pixels per inch (the largest proportion in the category) and laminated and anti-reflective screen.

Regarding the processor, this model uses the second generation A8 chip, has a 64-bit architecture and an M8 coprocessor (we’ll talk more about the differences between the processors in the last section of this article).

Just like any other model, the iPad Mini 4 comes with a front and rear camera. The front has 1.2 MP quality, with FaceTime HD feature, and the rear takes photos in 8 MP and makes videos in HD (1080p).

To unlock the screen, you use your fingerprint (Touch ID). To tinker with apps, count on Apple’s voice assistant, Siri. This device is not compatible with Apple Pencil, but supports connection to keyboards via Bluetooth.

The iPad Mini 4 has two sound outputs. The connections are: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2 and it accepts nano SIM card.

iPad

The conventional iPad has dimensions very similar to the Pro model, are 9.7 inches, 240 mm high, 169.5 mm wide, 7.5 mm deep and about 470 grams.

The processor is A10 Fusion, fourth generation, with 64 bits and integrated M10 coprocessor. The storage capacity is 32 or 128 GB. To unlock the device, use the Touch ID feature.

The camera’s image quality is the same as the previous model: 1.2 MP photos on the front camera, 8 MP for the rear camera, and HD videos.

In relation to the previous model (iPad Mini 4) this has the differential of allowing the use of Apple Pencil, in contrast the screen is not laminated or anti-reflective.

iPad Pro

The iPad Pro was launched with the proposal of being an alternative to the portable computer, for this reason it has a cutting edge processor, high performance operating system and differentiated features.

There are three versions of iPad Pro, models with a 10.5, 11 and 12.9 inch screen, but the differences do not end there, as the technical characteristics of the 10.5 inch model are different from the other two ( the only difference between them is the screen size).

Starting with the screen, the 10.5-inch model is Retina and the others is Liquid Retina, but both are equipped with Pro Motion and True Tone technologies. The dimensions (width x height x thickness) are similar.

The identification to access the device is made by digital in the smaller model, and by facial recognition in the other two. Both accept Apple Pencil, Smart Keyboard (larger models accept Folio version) and Bluetooth keyboards.

Regarding the processor there are also differences, the 10.5-inch model uses A10X Fusion chip with M10 coprocessor, while the other two use A12X Bionic chip with M12 coprocessor, both with 64 bits.

Regarding the cameras, both take pictures with 12 MP resolution and record with 4K technology on the rear camera. The front camera is different, in the 10.5 inch model the technology is FaceTime HD and in the other two models it is TrueDepth.

If you are still in doubt about which model is the best for you, analyze the table we have prepared, comparing several characteristics of both models. For this table, we separate the iPad Pro versions into two categories:

What is the best screen for an iPad?

All Apple iPads from the fourth generation are equipped with the exclusive Retina display, which does not allow the identification of pixels with the naked eye, as the concentration is high: 264 or 326 dpi (pixels per inch).

However, the recent launch of the brand, the iPad Pro is already equipped with a new display technology: the Liquid Retina expanded to the edges, following the curved design of the device.

he Liquid Retina display is the most accurate color LCD model in the industry. This version has some differentials such as Pro Motion and True Tone technologies.

Pro Motion delivers more realistic colors, including intense blacks. And True Tone is a light sensor that makes subtle adjustments to the white balance of the screen to match the color temperature of the ambient lighting, thereby making images look more real, as if they were printed on paper, and this helps greatly reduce tired eyes.

How do I choose the best processor for my needs?

Before we talk about the different processors of the current generations of iPads, let’s talk about some features that all processors have and that make all the difference from one model to another.

    • The RAM memory is used to run applications and software connected to the Internet, whether mobile data (3G or 4G) or broadband internet (Wi-Fi). The RAM memory is reset to zero each time the device is turned off.
    • The speed in GHz is used to measure the internal clock, that is, the number of pulses per second that a signal emits during processing. Frequency is only a speed parameter if we compare processors on the same line.
    • The cores function as independent processors. IPad models feature two (dual-core) to eight cores (octa-core). The greater the number of cores, the better the device’s performance.
    • The cache memory is a data storage space of the processor itself, usually has about 8MB. The cache memory records data that is accessed very frequently, so you can start it quickly.
    • The number of bits has a great influence on the performance of a device, and the more internal bits the processor has, the faster it will process the data. In the case of iPads, they are 64 bits (the maximum).

Current generations of Apple iPads are working with three types of processors: A8 (on iPad Mini 4), A10 Fusion (on Ipad), A10X Fusion (10.5-inch Pro model) and A12X Bionic (on Pro model, versions 11 and 12.9 inches).

The A8 processor is dual-core (two cores), has 2 GB of RAM, 1.5 GHz speed, 64-bit architecture, efficient to run even the most demanding applications and has an M8 coprocessor, with several sensors.

The A10 Fusion processor is quad-core (four cores), two with 2.34 GHz performance for more demanding tasks like games, and two other cores with lower speed and energy consumption. This model has 64 bits and an integrated M10 coprocessor.

The A10X Fusion model has a big difference: the size! This chip is only 10 nanometers, the reduction in physical size means more transistors in a smaller space that results in even better performance and lower battery consumption.

This model is in the fourth generation, has 64-bit architecture, three CPU cores, 8MB cache memory and integrated M10 coprocessor. Compared to the A8 chip, this model has a CPU 2.5 times faster and a GPU 4.3 times faster.

Finally, the AX12 Bionic processor is faster than 92% of portable computers sold in 2018, because this processor is an octa-core (there are eight cores), with 64 bits.

This chip uses a technology created by Apple itself: Neural Engine, that is, learning from the machine itself transforms the way you interact with games, augmented reality, photos and videos.

Neural Engine recognizes patterns, predicts behaviors and learns from experiences. This technology is so fast that it can perform five trillion operations per second.

How much?

The iPad has different prices, according to the model and generation. Currently, the Mini 4 model is costing around R $ 3,200 (128 GB version), the conventional iPad is cheaper, with a price around R $ 2,000.

The Pro line models are more expensive: the version with a 10.5 inch screen and 64 GB memory costs around R $ 6,100. The 11-inch model with 512 GB costs around R $ 11 thousand. The 12.9-inch version costs R $ 8,400 (64 GB) or above R $ 15 thousand if it is the 1 TB version.

The accessories also have a very high price. The Smart Keyboard costs around R $ 950 and the Apple Pencil R $ 760.

Purchasing criteria: Factors to compare and qualify the different iPad models

Regardless of the iPad you choose, know that you will be taking home a device of excellent quality. But, if you want a little help to choose the ideal model according to your needs and preferences, check out what features should be taken into account when purchasing:

  • Inch quantity
  • Platform (operating system)
  • Storage
  • Quality of cameras
  • Colors
  • Accessories

We will detail each of the items throughout this section.

Inch quantity

One aspect that changes from one iPad model to another is the size of the screen, measured in inches. The iPad Mini 4 is the most compact model and features a 7.9 inch screen.

The conventional iPad is slightly larger, at 9.7 inches. The iPad Pro is available in three sizes 10.5, 11 and 12.9 inches.

When choosing your own, take into account the maneuverability of each one. The larger models are not so simple to handle, for this reason Apple offers keyboard and pen (sold separately), to facilitate the use of the device.

In general, the smaller models are suitable for those who use the iPad for leisure and study and the versions of the Pro line for those who use the equipment for work.

Platform (operating system)

Apple iPads come with iOS operating system, which stands out in several features:

  • It is the most advanced, beautiful and easy to use interface;
  • IOS allows you to use different apps in a simple way and gives smart suggestions when you need them;
  • Advanced technology protects your privacy and keeps your data safe.

IOS was developed for Multi-Touch interactions, that is, everything is within reach of a touch, from opening applications, viewing your appointments (just slide to the right) and browsing thousands of files in a few seconds.

The operating system is very productive and agile, for example: the Archives app gathers all your documents (photos, videos, music, notes, etc.) in one place. The Dock helps you find your favorite applications, or those you have recently opened.

You can also browse multiple applications at the same time, using the Multitasking feature. And if you need, access the Siri virtual assistant, activated by the voice command: “Hey, Siri”.

IOS comes with some apps developed by Apple, and in the App Store you can find millions of other apps for carrying out countless activities, all of which are very intuitive (simple to handle) and rich in details.

Storage

You can find iPad models with different storage capacities. The simplest version has 32 GB of memory (conventional iPad). The Mini 4 model is mini only in name, as it has a capacity of 128 GB.

The 10.5-inch Pro model can be found in versions with 64, 256 or 512 GB and the 11 and 12.9-inch iPad Pro are found in those same versions and with a maximum storage capacity of 1TB.

Quality of cameras

Any iPad model has two cameras, the front and the rear. The quality between them changes both in the device itself (the front is always inferior), and from one model to the other.

On the iPad and iPad Mini 4 models the front camera has only 1.2 MP of resolution and 8 MP on the rear camera. The videos are made in HD (1080p). The quality changes a lot in the iPad Pro models. On both devices, the front camera has 7 MP, the rear camera has 12 MP and the videos are filmed in Ultra HD (4K) quality.

On iPad Pro models, the front camera has another difference: FaceTime HD feature on the 10.5 inch model, and TrueDepth on the 11 and 12.9 inch versions..

TrueDepth is the technology used in facial recognition, indispensable for the functioning of Face ID, Animoji and Memoji. The technology has a series of sensors, which allow facial reading even if the environment is in low light.

This feature works based on a set of components connected to the front camera, such as an infrared camera that reads more than 30 thousand dots to recognize the user’s face, a light emitter to detect the user’s face even in the dark and a dot projector.

FaceTime HD is the integrated front camera, located on the top of the iPad. It is triggered automatically when you open an application to take photos, film, make video calls or make phone calls.

Colors

You can find iPads in four color options: silver, space gray, gold and rose gold, but not all models have all these color options.

  • Silver : All models are available in this shade;
  • Space Gray : All models are available in this color;
  • Gold : 10.5-inch iPad Pro, iPad and iPad Mini 4;
  • Rose gold : 10.5-inch iPad Pro only.

Accessories

Apple iPads allow the use of two very interesting accessories, the Smart Keyboard Folio (only for the iPad Pro line) and Apple Pencil. Let’s talk a little more about them below:

The Smart Keyboard Folio is a complete and removable keyboard developed especially for the iPad Pro versions. The most interesting thing is that it fits magnetically on the back of the device.

When the device is not in use, the Smart Keyboard Folio acts as a case and protects the front and back of the device. The best thing is that this keyboard, besides dispensing wires or other types of connections (uses only magnets), does not work on batteries or batteries.

Apple Pencil is a very cool accessory, as it allows you to draw, write or sign digital documents with a real object. Apple Pencil is pencil, pen, highlighter and eraser at the same time and you change tools with two taps.

To use, simply pair the device. When reloading the accessory, just connect it magnetically to the side of the device and as soon as they are paired, the digital pencil begins to charge.
