Who was Jane Austen?
Jane Austen was born in 1775 in Steventon, England. Second daughter in a family with eight children, six boys and two girls, children of a reverend who served as tutor and had a vast library at home.
Since pre-adolescence, Jane Austen already showed interest and talent for writing, as she wrote short stories and novels, which she presented to her family in readings and plays.

As a teenager, Austen wrote comedies. At nineteen, she finished Lady Susan – a novel written in an epistolary form – although the book was only released more than 50 years after her death.
At 22, Jane Austen had written two novels Reason and Sensitivity and Pride and Prejudice, but the books were rejected by some publishers. The publications would only happen years later, between 1811 and 1813. The works were signed by the code name “uma madam”.
Jane Austen died in 1817, at the age of 41, from an illness. Although marriage was one of the central themes in her novels, the writer was never married.
